In the Diablo II folder, you will keep having items regardless if you are editing. You can always edit the item in the Diablo II folder, and in the Diablo II folder you will have items to edit in. However, after you have edited the item in the Diablo II folder, it is no longer a part of the Diablo II folder. So, once it is edited, you need to delete it. If you forget, you don't delete the item, but you will lose all of the edits, which means that after you import it back (if you still have it), it will be the worst possible item for your character. I will insert an example of how this is done.
Go into a game while editing, and go to the appropriate Diablo II folder. Once there, you should have an item to edit. Now, open up the item in the Diablo II folder. Copy the item's information and launch hero edit. Paste the information you copied from the item in the Diablo II folder into the Diablo II folder in hero edit. Once you are done copying and pasting the info, cancel out hero edit. You cannot modify an item in hero edit until you cancel it out.
You can import/export these items as item files through a trianer such as the Hero Editor. The items are in a.d2i format. You can import items from the library to gear up an experimental build or just to start with an already geared character. The export function is also really good. If you have found an item and you want to share it (as an item file) with the rest of the world, you can export this item into a.d2i file where others can use too. d2c66b5586
